Why Is Irina Shayk Wrapping Her Head in Tinfoil?

We’ve all been watching budding new supercouple Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk cozy up over the past several months, but one particular accessory seemed to steal the show on the duo’s recent Italian vacation: The Victoria’s Secret model stepped out to sunbathe with her hair wrapped in aluminum foil, according to the Daily Mail.

So why, exactly, was she doing that? No, she wasn’t trying to start a new hat trend or block radio waves. Shayk was using a “deep reparative hair mask,” according to celebrity hairstylist Marley Gonzales. “Irina is taking care of her gorgeous locks while bronzing by the pool,” she tells Yahoo Beauty.

Gonzales says these hair masks can help keep a model’s mane — or yours — healthy and shiny all year long. “Hot tools and hair coloring can take their toll and leave the hair lifeless, damaged and dull,” Gonzales says. Enter hair masks, which are becoming a huge trend.

Salons do serve up similar restorative treatments, but most busy women may want to invest in a store-bought mask instead. “No one wants to sit in a salon under a dryer, especially while on vacation,” Gonzales says. “By using an at-home, deep-penetrating mask, you can simply wrap hair up in foil for the same effect as you’d get sitting under a dryer for 20 to 30 minutes.”

According to Gonzales, a mask “allows the cuticle to open up and thoroughly seep into the hair follicle.” The treatment typically nourishes with fatty acids and lipids to help the cuticle remain strong, so hair stays lush and vibrant. “After a long day by the pool, simply rinse out with cold water in the shower to seal down the cuticle and lock in that moisture,” Gonzales says. Voila! Healthy hair.

If your hair could use some extra TLC and you want to try this trick yourself, Gonzales recommends Kerastase Masque Nutri-Thermique ($62.50) — her go-to favorite for deep moisture. Other great options are Amika Nourishing Hair Mask ($10) and Rahua Omega 9 Hair Mask ($58). Most masks instruct you to leave the treatment on your strands for roughly a few minutes to several hours.

Either way, you’ll have restored hair in a short amount of time, so a mask is a great addition to your beauty regimen — and like Shayk just showed us with her tinfoil hat, you can refresh your hair while doing plenty of other fun summer activities.
